Re: Server Exchange/Rebuild

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

Once you have promoted one of the other servers to a dc I would first demote
the other one before renaming it.

Thanks for the reply. That's essentially what I thought I would do with
one
exception. I was planning on promoting one of my existing servers,
renaming
my original dc, installing the new server (with the original name), and
the
promoting the new server. Exchange is not involved, just data and
applications. Sound about right?

You can't build a computer with the same computer name and have it
connected
to your network. What you should do is build the computer with a new
name,
join to the domain, dcpromo and then migrate whatever services you have
on
the current dc to the new dc. If you have only 1 dc you might consider
keeping both. Finally if Exchange is involved then much more planning and
expertise will be required.

I have a main server in which I have Active Directory setup and then I
have
two separate file servers.

Can you clarify what this means - " I am replacing is my Domain
controller
with two other
servers?"

I have a server that I need to replace. Luckily for me I have
another
server
(which is better) waiting to be loaded and configured. My plan is
to
load
the Server Operating system onto the new system, configure and name
it
the
same as the old server, and when completed just swap the systems.
Problem
one is that the system I am replacing is my Domain controller with
two
other
servers. Problem two is I have quite a few users and peripherals
configured
for this domain. What would be the best way to solve these two
problems?

Thanks,

Ted
