Thanks for your help guys.
I used the shutdown /r /m \\servername to shut it down from another
machine.
It took an eternity to startup. I got errors 1058 and 1030 after it had
started and have been resolving this all day today (all resolved now).
Seems that the updates I did yesterday caused real bad problems. Thanks
anyway.

Hi,
I have my forest root server that i have tried restarting remotely
after applying windows updates. The problem is that it has not
restarted and i am now unable to TS back in. I am able to get
continuous ping replies and can even remotely access the event viewer,
services snap ins. However, how do i get it to restart or even better
shut down a service that will restart it.
I don't have physical access as it is in a data centre in a remote
location.
Please help and many thanks in advance.
it happens that a server doesn't restart completely
this is usually due to a service that hangs
or a message blinking on the local desktop instead of the remote desktop
with some luck you could forcefully shut down the server with a remote
shutdown utility or kill the hung service
but most of the time the server will no longer respond to these tools
usually there are other remote ways for restarting a server in a data
warehouse, like a power switch or a KVM switch over IP
you might call an employee or supervisor over there to find out
grtz
