Re: No Profile for XP user

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Hi Anna,

You've provided a very detailed and helpful explanation of you
configuration. I have two questions though:
Do you expect the userX.domain accounts not to have profiles created on the
laptop?
Are the laptop and desktop computers in the same OU?

My thoughts:
All member computers of a domain should have their local group policies
overwritten by domain level policies when connected to the domain. The event
ID:1054 may be because the domain level policies have not been applied.

Incorrect DNS settings can result in strange login related problems. I
noticed Debo had asked about the results of nslookup from the laptop. You
might also want to check that the DNS settings on the IP configuration tab on
the laptop is configured the same as the desktops.

Hope this was helpful

can user1 access other websites or is it just logmein.com causing the
problem?

Is the laptop a member of the domain? On the laptop, if you do an
nslookup what comes back? What are the results from ipconfig /all?

Hello Everyone:

Here is one that I have never seen before, I hope you can help....

Windows Server 2003 domain controller, with two desktop computers and
one
notebook. The owner of this setup is an expert in his field, and
needs
all three computers to test the very high end software that he is a
reseller for. But he is not a "computer guy" or an OS savvy person.

All three computers, two desktops and one notebook are Windows XP, SP
2
and fully patched.

The desktops work properly, but the notebook does not. On all three
computers there is local user "user1" local user "user2" and domain
user "user1.domain" and domain user "user2.domain". I know these are
different folks to Windows, but he likes it that way in case he wants
to
login to the local computer he can use the same names.

On the desktop computers the users are given a profile: that is a set
of
folders under "C:\Documents and Settings", and a registry entry for
user1
and another for user1.domain, and a registry entry for user1 and one
for
user1.domain. Likewise for "user2", and also for "administrator".

On the notebook, the user is given a profile and a set of folders,
and a
registry entry, but userx.domain is not. This does not matter if it
is
user1 or user2. Except for one thing... user1 can connect to
https://logmein.comsecure web site and user2 cannot connect to
https://logmein.comsecure web site. This has nothing to do with the
account at logmein.com, since all login connections are made as
user2.
Rather the page refuses to load. Like wise for the high end software
he
sells. User1 can make the connection, User2 cannot.

Since user2 would like to connect as himself, we are hoping for a
fix...

The only relevant error in the event log is:

1054-Source Userenv Type Error Description Windows cannot obtain
the
domain controller name for your computer network. (<error
description>).
Group Policy processing aborted.

I could understand if group policy was setting up roaming profiles,
or
some other vital setting for the users, but then no domain user on
any
computer should have a profile set??

Anyone seen this before? All solutions welcome and acknowledged.

Thanks for considering my issue and more thanks for any and all
assistance.

Anna Clark
