Re: Allowing non-admins to add network printers

They are hosted on a print server running windows server 2k3. The
printers themselves are getting DHCP address and the print server uses
a DNS connection to the printer. Users who do not already have the
same driver on their system have troubles adding them and need to be
elevated. I'd like to avoid logon scripts, as that would be a
nightmare to run. I was wondering if there was a GPO or some setting
that I can set which will allow my users to add network printers w/o
regards to having admin rights.

Thanks.

I believe the answer depends on what you consider a "network" printer. For
example, Windows XP will require the end user to be in the Power Users group
plus have the right to load/unload device drivers in order to add a standard
TCP/IP based printer.

The other type of "network" printer type is that of a printer share. Since
the Windows server (?) hosting the printer will have a copy of the required
drivers for the platform, most just end up using login scripts to get the
printer added to the user profile.

You also might want to take a look at Windows 2003 R2, because there are
some improvements in the area of getting printers assigned to desktops.

I've searched all over the web this morning and have not found a
solution to a problem that I assumed would be easy. Here's the
situation:

We are locking down the environment, and standard users cannot add
network printers. In a previous job, this wasn't an issue, so I assume
there's a fix. But I have no idea what it is. I've looked at the GPO
settings that you can do for printers. Other than giving them rights
to load and unload device drivers (which was not done in my previous
job) I don't seen an obvious policy that will give them rights to add
network printers.

Has anyone here implemented a GPO or some other type of setting that
allows a standard user to add a network printer? If so, how did you do
it?
