Re: How to configure a client for iterative query for name resolut

Hi!
I believe this describes behaviour of "Do not use recursion for
this domain" checkbox:
If the DNS server is configured to use recursion and the forwarder is unable
to resolve the query, the DNS server that received the original query can
issue iterative queries to root servers to resolve the name.
If the DNS server is configured not to use recursion and the forwarder is
unable to resolve the request, the DNS server that received the original
query will not issue iterative queries to root servers to resolve the name.
These DNS servers make no attempt to resolve the query on their own if the
forwarder is unable to satisfy the request.
I don't believe, that you can set your client up to perform only iterative
queries. In my opinion, clients will perform "iterative" query only if ithey
got refferals instead of answer.

Thanks, Toni, for your response.
Found similar statement from Microsoft Document. What is not so sure is
what does this statement implies "If you want the DNS server to only use
forwarders and not attempt any further recursion if the forwarders fail,
select the Do not use recursion for this domain check box."
1. I assume it means that this DNS server may still check with other
forwarders on the list BUT NOT use the roothint servers to pursue further.
2. Is there a way for this DNS server to tell the forwarder that if the
forwarder soesn't have the answer, look no further?
This Microsoft on-line doc,
http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsServer/en/library/0bcd97e6-b75d-48ce-83ca-bf470573ebdc1033.mspx?mfr=true
said that "Iteration is the type of name resolution used between DNS
clients
and servers when the following conditions are in effect:
. The client requests the use of recursion, but recursion is disabled on
the
DNS server.
. The client does not request the use of recursion when querying the DNS
server."
But not sure how to set it up.

Hi!
As far as I know DNS client can perform recursive queries only.
If you want the DNS server to only use forwarders and not attempt any
further recursion if the forwarders fail, select the Do not use recursion
for this domain check box.

1. How can I configure an XP or WIn2k3 server client to issue an
iterative
name query?
2. On a DNS server forwarder page, if I check "Do not use recursion
for
this domain " would all queries for this domain stop by the forwarder,
i.e.,
requesting the forwarder not to pursue further if it doesn't have a RR
for
the name?
Many thanks!
