Re: Server 2003 SP1, SUS 1.0 SP1 help

WSUS and SUS do not offer any type of end user interface like Microsoft's
Windows Update site. Basically if you want to stop users from applying
updates from Windows Update, you need to apply the setting that "Removes
access to use all Windows Update features".

Of course if you really want to stop users from applying unapproved
software, updates, .etc, you have to knock them out of the local
administrators group, but I digress. ;)

Note: I'm studying for the 70-290 and trying to get SUS to run
successfully in Server 2003 SP1. The MCSE 70-290 book states that the
exam is over SUS and not WSUS. This is the reason I am working with SUS
and not WSUS.

I installed and setup Software Update Services in Windows Server 2003 SP1.
I had to change some settings in the Directory Security tab in the IIS
Manager to get the SUSAdmin to load in Internet Explorer 7; Enabled
anonymous access and select Integrated Windows authenication. I can
access the SUSAdmin web page on the Windows Server 2003 system, however, I
cannot get the Windows XP Pro SP2 clients to access the SUS server.

In Windows XP Pro SP2 (not logged in to the domain) I ran gpedit.msc,
edited Local Computer Policy / Administrative Templates / Windows
Components / Windows Update for the SUS server settings. I enabled the
settings in the Configure Automatic Updates and Specify intranet Microsoft
update service location. After entering the SUS information in gpedit,
the registry hive now exists:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU

When the Windows XP Pro SP2 system logs in to the domain the
gpo_AutoUpdate applies. The GPO has the SUS server settings
(http://server2003) as the non AD GPO.

In Internet Explorer 6 when I click Tools and Windows Update, the
Microsoft Update web site loads and not the local SUS server. When I
enter the SUS server address (http://server2003), Internet Explorer shows
the Under Construction web page.

After reading the chapter in the book about SUS, I thought setting up SUS
server and clients wouldn't take much time, but it seems it has. I may be
overlooking something, if so, I'm not sure what it is.

Any suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
