Recently had a server (2003 standard) go belly up on me. One of the HD'swas
configured as a Dynamic Simple drive. After installing new HD anddirve
reinstalling server 2003, the dynamic drive now shows up as a foriegn
and I can't access the data on it. I tried importing the drive but itshows
no data on the drive and I still can't access the data on it. Can someone
tell me if the data is lost forever on the dynamic configured drive and if
not, how I may be able to access it again. Thanks.

You can make it appear as a basic disk by doing this:
- Boot the machine with a Win98 boot disk (www.bootdisk.com).
- Run ptedit.exe
(ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/tools/pq/utilities/)
- Change the partition type to NTFS.
- Test it by running ntfsdos.exe /L:MN (www.sysinternals.com).
- Install the disk as a slave disk on some other machine and retrieve
your data.
- Review your backup policy.
Changes made under ptedit are fully reversible as long as
you change only the partition type and make a note of the
original value.
