Re: Server 2003 Repair

Looks like both of my responses made it even though I was told the first
response was lost.

Okay let me see if I can give you enough details:

Dell PowerEdge 1650 - W2K3 Member Server
We were infected with a virus.
I booted to a CD, cleaned up the virus and then rebooted. We never got to an
OS loading screen, the system simply sat there going through the Dell boot
sequence.
I was never able to get to safe mode boot and hence never able to get to
last known good profile option.
No worries, I decided to do a Repair from the W2K3 source CD. It ran fine
and even loaded up the GUI and was going through the setup steps on the left
(I had even keyed in the license key). It ran and ran and ran. Finally I got
the screen that I first reported in my original post: The message about not
being able to read from the CD, etc....

If I don't put the source CD into the system, it does nothing, i.e., it goes
into it's perpetual boot. I am, however, able to boot to safe mode now, but
it then tells me that I can't run safe mode in setup. I can get to last
known good profile, but it simply says, restarting setup, and then it crashes
/ locks up is really what it does (I have to hold the power button down to
force a hard reboot) with the message about "Setup unable access...."

I hope that helps?

Still missing details so I really don't know what you've got going. What
happens when you try starting up normally? Why the repair? How are you
attempting this? ........and anything else you can offer.

| I just learned a lesson on the posting side of things...I typed for a good

It

|
| Let me try this again: I have a Dell server and I am using the Dell OEM
| Server 2003 CD. My experience is that it loads the correct drivers for
the
| controllers as part of the process. But I will think about this a bit.
|
| I am pretty much stuck booting into a "setup" version of W2k3. Even in
safe
| mode it loads and then comes up with a dialogue box that says, that setup
| can't be loaded into safe mode. I really need to get rid of the setup
| version stuff. Any ideas how I clear that? I also checked the boot.ini
but
| it is only pointing to the normal / orginal boot os load location. This
is
| very perplexing and highly frustrating. Let me know what you think.
