RE: Explorer slow or stops responding using network shortcuts in W2K3

Thanks for posting.

So far there is no equivalent hotfix for Windows Server 2003 because we
didn't find this issue occurred widerly. Therefore, I think we'd better try
to narrow down this issue first.

For your current situation, I have following suggestions:

1.If this server act as DC, please demote it temporarily cause it will make
the troubleshoot process effectively.

2. We may start the problematic computer in safe mode to see if this issue
occurs.The steps to boot into safe mode are as below:

Safe Mode loads a minimally protected-mode configuration, disabling Windows
device drivers and using the standard VGA display adapter.

1) Restart the computer.
2) Keep pressing F8 key until the Windows Startup menu appears.
3) Choose the Safe Mode with Network, and press Enter.

Note: Some third party applications and some hardware device cannot be used
during Safe Mode. You will temporarily be unable to connect to the Internet
temporarily while in Safe Mode.

If this issue disappears in safe mode, I suspect that it is related to some
third-party services or programs. We may use Clean Boot to eliminate third
party interference. To boot into Clean Boot environment:

1) Click Start, click Run, type "msconfig" (without the quotation marks) in
the Open box, and then click OK.
2) In the Startup tab, click the "Disable All" button.
3) In the Services tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" checkbox,
and then click the "Disable All" button.
4) Click OK and restart your computer.


3. Create another new user profile to test
1) Log on as the Administrator or as a user with administrator credentials.
2) Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
3) Click User Accounts.
4) Click the Advanced tab, and then click Advanced.
5) In the left pane, click the Users folder.
6) On the Action menu, click New User.
7) Enter the appropriate user information, and then click Create.
8) Logon with the new user account to see if the issue occurs in the user
profile.

4. To eliminate the possible cause of virus or spyware, I¡¯d like to
suggest you try the following on-line free virus scanner on your PC first.

5. To know if this issue related to SP1, I'd like to suggest you
temporarily remove SP1 to see the results.

Since upgrading some of our W2K3 servers to SP1 we have noticed problems
with
Windows Explorer being slow or it stops responding when browsing deep
into a
folder tree of a network share accessed by means of a network shortcut
created with the "Add Network Place" wizard. Browsing to the same
location by
entering the initial path in the Windows Explorer address bar does not
have
the same problem. This seems to be a similar problem to that described in
KB
article 841978 for WinXP. Is there an equivalent hotfix for Windows
Server
2003.
