Re: Impact if changing the number of cpu

Thanks for your answer, it will help me.

So there should be no impact for Windows Server 2003 if we remove one CPU
for a specific VMware Virtual Machine ? Because I never had to change to
number of CPU for a server in the past and one of my partner told me that you
had to reinstall Windows when you change the number of CPU.

Jocelyn,

Not sure if this answers your question, but you can do the following:

put the /NUMPROC=1 option in the boot.ini file, and you OS will boot with
only 1 processor. This without physically removing the CPU from your
hardware.

Also in regards to your VMWARE question. Assuming you use "VMWare Server" or
"VMWare ESX server" you can configure your virual machine to have 1 or 2
CPU's. You can just simply take one out if you have 2 CPU's configured for
your virtual machine. Same with memory, you can adjust memory either up or
down.
You can configure VMWare using the virtual management console, or editing
the .vmx file manually.
Note: your virtual machine needs to be shut down to make changes to the
CPU/memory.

Optional, you can use the /NUMPROC=1 in the boot.ini of your virtual
machines as well.

Obviously, you need to determine what the minimum CPU's and memory should be
for your virtual machines to run your applications.

_Edwin.

We need to change the number of CPU in our machines because of the
licensing
per CPU that a lot of enterprise our now using.

What is the impact in Windows Server 2003 of adding or removing a physical
CPU on a server ? Is it plug and play ? Do you need to reinstall the
operating system ? Is there know issues about it ?

Do you know any issues of changing the amount of CPU or memory in a
virutal
machine using VMWARE ?
