Re: Unable to start services

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Hi Edwin,

and thank you for your response.

I checked the services and they are all enabled in the hardware profile.
There are some events in the system log, but the only error represented is
DCOM, which is normal since the COM service is not starting up.

Regards,
Ola

one more thing you could check:

- open the properties page of a service which is not starting
- goto the "logon" tab
- check (bottom of the property page) that the service is enabled in your
hardware profile
- enable if disabled, and close the property page
- try starting again.

repeat this for all services which are not starting

oh, and check the system event log .... any messages there ?

HTH
_Edwin.

Hello,
We have a Win Srv 2003 Std. with SP1, which is up-to-date with
Microsoft
Update. After a reboot many services (key services) were unable to
start.
All
these services are set to automatic startup. I am not able to start
them
manually either. Tried different Antivirus and Antispy software with
no
results. When I log in to Windows, I see that only 4 svchost.exe
processes
are running. I believe there should be more.

Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance

You write "I am not able to start them manually either." Since we
cannot see your server, you need to report what exactly happens
when you try to start them. Remember to state the name of the
service you're concerned about.

Thank you for your response

Here are a complete list of those services set to automatic startup,
that
won`t start. Application Experience Lookup Service, Automatic Updates,
COM+
Event System, Computer Browser, Cryptographic services, Distributed Link
Tracking Client, Error Reporting Service, Logical Disk Manager, Machine
Debug
Manager, Net Logon, Secondary Logon, Server, Shell Hardware Detection,
System
Event Notification, Task Scheduler, TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, Terminal
Services,
Windows Audio, Windows Management Instrumentation, Windows Time,
Wireless
Configuration and Workstation.
These services will not start in safe either. When I try to start one of
these services manually I got the following error: Error 1053: The
service
did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

Regards,
Ola

I agree - this look serious. I have no idea why these services won't
start. Here is what I would do in this situation, in this order.
- Create an image of the system disk, to be used in case the repair
attempts break something.
- Test the image.
- Read what other respondents suggest.
- Try a System Restore (if your version of Windows Server has this
facility).
- Restore the System State from your backup medium.
- Perform a repair installation.
