What I meant was, if you have stored the databases or any other part of
MySQL on another drive, and then perhaps an inherited permissions has
changed, if System had been removed, then the service would start but it
would not be able to load up the databases.

Anthony, yes the System account has the correct permissions set (If it had
not, the service wouldn't start at all I think).
I forgot to mention a very strange symptom, when starting the service
under
Local System account, the process immediatly shows up in Task Manager's
process tab. When I examine the Mem Usage column, I see that memory
consumption starts at about 2MB, and every second or so it increases with
about 20kb. When I start under Administrator account, the Mem Usage of the
process immediatly consumes 80MB, which is the normal behaviour.
Any ideas?

Only the obvious suggestion: where you have set permissions manually,
have
you included System: Full Control?

I have a machine that's running a mysql instance configured as a service
in
Windows Server 2003. Lately the startup process of that service began
to
take
a ridiculous amount of time (5 hours!!!). I have found that when I
change
the
identity of the service from Local System to Administrator, the service
starts up in a few seconds. I'm suspecting something is wrong with the
built-in Local System account, so my question is if there's any way to
repair
the Local System account? (I''m not running DC or something)
Or am I totally wrong with this diagnosis, and are there other factors
I
should check?
Many thanks in advance for your help!
