Re: Software RAID5 slow write speeds

The only other thing I can think of is doing a write to itself, say between
drives or partitions on the NAS. I suppose you could also reading and
writing to a USB storage. This would tell you whether the problem is the
RAID or the networking.

Try hard setting the NICs to 100MB or 1GB Full Duplex instead of
letting it autosense. Also set the ports on the switch to what you
hard set your NICs to. Auto-decting port speeds has a lot of overhead,
so it's always best in a production or enterprise environment to hard
set them. Hope that works for ya.

Hi Kyle,
Tried setting both NICs to 100mb Full and changed the Switch port
settings also which strangley decreased the data write speed a
fraction! With Autosense its 21.37 KB per second & 100mb Full 21.27 KB
per second!

These write speeds are completely unacceptable and I am baffled how so
many units have been sold by HP for business use!

Check these tests I have done:

WRITE 11MB TO NAS 1200S - 21.37kbps
READ 11MB FROM NAS 1200S - 888.62kbps

WRITE 11MB TO IOMEGA NAS 200M - 7,656.44kbps
READ 11MB FROM IOMEGA NAS 200M - 7,121.58kbps

WRITE 11MB TO DELL PE2650 - 9,031.96kbps
READ 11MB FROM DELL PE2650 - 10,367.20kbps

Any other ideas much appreciated, as all HP are saying is apply their
SP1 for Storage server, which will take 6 weeks to arrive from America,
and I cant really see that fixing this!

Thanx
