The Intranet or Trusted Sites are set in policy and the user is blocked from
changing them. I do not believe that the policy is not being applied to the
users having difficulty. However, this is not out of the question.
One thing I realized after reading this article, the problem isnt just with
Internet Explorer. Those users experiencing the problem also receive the
login popup when our server sends out emails with links back to the server
(images). The user, in this instance, isnt using Internet Explorer, they are
using Outlook.
Does this make a difference?

You can change it manually as administrator on a PC to see if this is the.

In that size of network I would expect the Intranet or Trusted Sites to be
set in policy, and the user to be blocked from changing them, so maybe a
policy is not being applied to the new users..
The users could also just be using a different URL. Http://intranet is
considered to be internal but http://intranet.mydomain.com is not. Have a
look at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/258063/en-us.
If it is none of these, it could possibly be caused by a proxy server, but
try this first,

Anthony,
Oops! I do have Integrated Windows Authentication set up. Sorry for the
confusion. We have approximately 25,000 users, and each machine is built
with a basic image on each machine. When the new image is put on the
machine, (Windows XP) the user typically has no problem with the Intranet
sites. However, a small number of users are being prompted for their
login
credentials.
I have been told that this has something to do with the fact that they are
on XP machines and the operating system is not sending the login
credentials
through to the browser. From your response, it seems like there is a
variation in the OS image being loaded on these machines that does not
have
the trusted sites setting at the correct level to pass the credentials.
Could that be the easy fix?
Thank you for your help!!

If you have Basic authentication, all users should be prompted every
time.
If you have Windows Integrated authentication, people who have put the
intranet into their Trusted Sites or Intranet zones will be authenticated
without a prompt using their logon ID. People who have not put the
intranet
site into their Trusted Stes or Intranet zones will be prompted.
Putting the site into the Trusted Sites or Intranet zones is a way of
setting the User Authentication security option "Automatic logon with
current username and password".

Help! I have a windows 2003 server with iis 6.0 installed. I have
basic
authentication set up on all websites and i do not allow anonymous
access.
Most of our users on the network authenticate fine. However, those
that
have
just moved to XP machines are receiving a login pop up and are required
to
log in again. Is there a setting on their machine causing this, or is
there
something on the server causing this?
