You write "Its [sic] let you create the files but if you try
to back them up or archive them you have trouble". This
is not quite correct. Windows lets you create such files,
back them up or archive them for as long as you operate
in the the same context, e.g. while connected to a given
share. If you change the context by accessing such files
not through a share but directly on the server's disk
then you make the effective path considerably longer and
Windows will throw up an error. This is probably a
Windows limitation rather than one of the underlying
file system. It exists in Win2003 server too.
This also means that you can back up such files by
making the same share connection as your users.

Its let you create the files but if you try to back them up or archive
you have trouble also word excel etc will start complaining about filepath
not found etc.
