Windows update on Server 2003

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

I've been the admin of a single server (Netware) LAN and am in the
process of adding a Server 2003 machine. Windows update on a server is
new to me as Netware doesn't have the monthly plethora of critical
updates. I am wondering about running Windows Update on a Server 2003
machine. Do all users need to be logged off or shut down when Windows
Update is run? I'm assumming so because of the restart but that is
illogical since autoupdate would then cause problems if enabled (I have
it disabled now). Would someone please advise as to how they go about
doing Windows updates on their Windows server(s)?

TIA
