Hi Brian,
First, I have no idea why they ask you to install KB887827 but I think
following KB891957 should help. Please try to install it and let me know
the results.
Update is available that fixes various Volume Shadow Copy Service issues in
Windows Server 2003

Have a good day.
Best regards,
Vincent Xu

Greetings all. Sorry for the repost. This is my third attempt at getting
part ofactual response from MS on this newsgroup. I paid for this service as
mymy Technet Plus, so I'm hoping they are actaully listening somewhere.
I have been looking for an answer to this problem. I seem to have found a
lot of questions about it, but none of the answers work or would apply to
programsproblem.
I have a windows 2003 DC. All it has is Windows, with no 3rd party
foldersor utilities. I have written a backup script to backup some of the
"Preparingon C: and the system state. When I run it manually, it hangs at
theto backup using volume shadow copy". When it runs as a scheduled task,
theevent viewer says crashes with event ID 12298:
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: The I/O writes cannot be held during
theshadow copy creation period on volume
\\?\Volume{a6075b76-de45-11d9-ac30-806e6f6e6963}\. The volume index in
-shadow copy set is 0. Error details: Open[0x00000000], Flush[0x00000000],
Release[0x80042314], OnRun[0x00000000].
and also event ID 12230:
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: The shadow copy could not be committed
stilloperation timed out. Error context:
DeviceIoControl(\\?\Volume{a6075b76-de45-11d9-ac30-806e6f6e6963} -
0000014C,0x0053c010,0003A5A0,0,0003B5A8,4096,[0]).
I have tried this with the volume shadow copy turned on and off and I
itget the same problem. Based on some information I found, I contacted
Microsoft and they sent me the hotfix from KB887827, but I can't install
luckon my server. I get an error "Setup has detected that the service pack of
this system is newer than the update you are trying to install". So no
usingthere.
One suggestion I did find in my searches was a suggestion to turn off
myshadow copy for the backup. So I have specified the /SNAP:off option in
backup command, yet it is still trying to make a shadow copy.
Anyone got any other ideas? Thanks!
Brian
