WINS log files filling drive

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Yesterday and today, I've had a problem with log files in the C:\WINNT\WINS
folder filling up the C: drive on my Windows 2000 system. I don't know if
this is the cause, but yesterday morning, I used Add/Remove Programs to add
File Services for Macintosh. The C: drive filled up yesterday afternoon
and I was able to clear off about 2GB of temp files and we were running
again. Today, I connected and the drive was just about full again. I
started Task Manager and noticed that WINS.EXE was using about 40% of the
processor. I checked the WINS folder and it had 2.5GB of data in it.

Following KB302079, I stopped WINS (net stop wins) and moved all the files
in the WINS folder to a WINS.OLD folder on another drive. When I started
WINS again (net start wins), it immediately started creating 1MB log files.
In the first minute, it created 15 files.

For now, I've just stopped the WINS service. I'm not sure if that will
cause any problems or not. What can I do to stop my system from being
overrun by WINS log files? Did it have anything to do with installing the
File Services for Macintosh? Maybe something happened during the network
reconfiguration that Add/Remove Programs goes through when adding or
removing network services?

Thanks,
Mike
