Couldn't y'all use a Unix or VMS box to serve them up via LPR? however, that would not help with reconfiguring all those boxes, tho.. but, it would keep the printserver relatively clean.
Call lantronix and ask them, they've been the print server business a long time.. They may have a solution. I've used Jetdirect's and Lantronix's, and the Lantronixs beat the Jet's hands down for reliability... one prints to them via lpr, reverse telnet, directly, it matters not..

Of course that can be done. The issue here is that we have 2 people on staff who do the installs. We are looking at replacing printers at all 300 locations with 2 new LaserJets. The math is 2 X 300 X (Aproximately) 2.5 installs done by 2 people - and the installs require reboots and credential changes as the PC users only have user rights - not power user or admin..
While I'd like to be able to push this out through Group Policy, I am having trouble finding a usable option. I can define a PC at each site as a print server, define the printers on that print server and deploy the printers via Group Policy, but the down sides are the usual concerning if the PC is turned off, if the PC gets hit by a virus and has to be sent up here to be rebuilt, all the usual.
Is there any way to do this using JetDirects? When the server and printers are defined, the system immediately tries to push the print drivers to the server. Is there a way around this, then having the individual PCs download the drivers for the first time using an alternative location?

Why not just print direct to the printers? Have the Client print and
Spool its own jobs. Or Have th client print direct to the printer.
You may need to upgrade the Ram on the local printers though..

growing to 500-600 in the next 3 years) with only a couple PCs and printers
in each site. All are connected by MPLS network. Circuits are rather small
because most traffic is SNA. We use a hosting center for our Internet gateway
so all sites connect there. The scenario would suppose an R2 server at the
hosting center with the Print Management Console running in the MMC. Because
of the small number of users at each site, a server is out of the question at
the site. JetDirects are an option if necessary.
I can define and deploy the printers at each site using the PMC / MMC and
add them to the OU (each site being an OU) and the group policy for the OU
and have the printer pushed out to the computer when the user logs in. The
question is how to handle print spooling - rememberiong that most of the
connections are 128K. Can Jet directs be set up in PMC / MMC and have the
jobs spool directly to the local JetDirect?
Is it possible to use the scenario proposed above but somehow have the jobs
spool locally rather than spool on the print server? If someone prints a 2M
file and it has to be transferred up to the print server at the hosting
center then transferrred back down to the local printer over a 128K pipe, the
system is not usable.
Any help greatly appreciated.
