My philosophy is that as long as my servers are on the air conditioners
need to be on as well. You usually see a max operating temperature in the
manuals at somewhere in the 80s but I don't like it getting warmer than 72
at anytime. My goal is to get my server room down to 68 but I need a more
efficient air conditioner, or a better sealed room. I have a digital
thermometer in front of the servers so that it shows the temperature of
the air that the servers are sucking in. That's the temperature that I
make sure is constant and cool. There are other parts of the room that
feel warmer but it's just because of the exhaust air from the servers...
that air rises and is subsequently cooled by the A/C which is near the
ceiling.

As for your boss, let him/her know that without proper cooling they are
going to have much more to worry about when the servers start to crash.
With that said, however, I don't think 78 is going to do much damage, but
any warmer than that and you might start to run into trouble... the summer
heat might bump that up over 80.

know it's warmer than that - I have a very good 'body temperature
gauge' - mostly because my husband controls the thermostat at home. The
temp when I come in in the morning feels about 78 degrees and too warm
for the server. The a/c is left off for the night. My boss and I are
