Re: What can I most usefully use WS 2003 for in my situation?

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Not to sound cheeky, but the reason you haven't found anything for home
users is because it isn't designed for home users.

The base reccomended is neworks with above 10 clients. And with greater and
greater returns as you scale up.

There are four basic benefits I can see you reaping from using this server.

1 AD - centralized storage for accounts, passwords, log in scripts,
software distribution (for xp and 2k clients only) etc
2 Once AD is up you can utilize the file and print sharing for central
storage. You can also implement folder redirection so that things like you
my documents folder follows you from pc to pc.
3 IIS ands SMTP/POP servers will allow you to have a nice out of the box
mail and webserver solution. IIS on w2k3 server , unlike its cousin on XP,
can host as many diffrent web sites as you want, which is great for
development.
4. This can serve as a basis to add other server based software to enhance
your network, such as an ISA server to control internet access, or
Sharepoint for a better and easier to use alterantive to simple filesharing.
SQL server to develope database apps. The list goes on and on.

All this requires a good amount of work, so if you feel it is worth it for a
network with only six systems, then by all means, have at it.

Personally, if you are in possesion of a valid copy with CALs then I would
sell it on ebay.

I have WS 2003 Enterprise. I have half a dozen PCs at home running
Windows ME and XP, mostly XP. I use these PCs mainly for photo and
video editing work and keeping a library of music to play when I edit
my photos. I might also do some software development in the future.

I am thinking of installing the server software on one of the PCs. So
far the only use for this server that I can think of is printer and
file sharing. I assume I can put my music library on this server and
listen to it from any of the PCs in the house.

Are there other uses that I can take advantage of? I don't think I want
to host my own website.
I am reading a few books such as WS 2003 for Dummies and Learning
Windows Server 2003. But none of these target 'home' users like me.
