Out of curiosity I had a look at the product and found it to
be quite interesting. It requires no installation and it can
create an imag file while Windows is up and running. It
lets you even look into an image file and extract files out of
it, using a standard Windows Explorer interface.
Restoring a system from an image file outside Windows is
possible but somewhat underdeveloped. You get a
character-based user interface reminiscent of PQMagic
Version 2 - nothing for the faint-hearted. The receiving disk
must be prepartitioned - Snapshot will not restore an image
to an unpartitioned disk. Furthermore the receiving partition
must be at least as large as the source partition was, even
if only a fraction of its space was used.
At about US$47 (Workstation) the product's price is much
the same as similar products. The server version costs US$107
which is much cheaper than similar products. 30-day evaluation
versions are available and appear to be mostly functional.
If working from within Windows then Snapshot is definitely
a faster option than booting with a Bart PE CD and using
xcopy.exe to clone the disk. And it's a lot faster than using
ntbackup.exe!

Hi,
I have a win2003 server (DC) with two drives, IDE0 master for OS and
restoremaster for home folders and profilesdrive
Say I want to use NTBackup to backup everything, I select system_state
and
all the partitions in the two drives.
I then want to restore everything onto two NEW drives, bigger than the
original drives. The two new drives are installed and I have a third
with the large backup file.
How do I proceed from here? To be able to boot, run NTBackup and
arethe backup. I assume that I can boot from the w2003 installer CD, butI
can
run NTBackup from there without installing everything?sometime
Finally after a successful restore, will all user/profile
sharing/security
links be OK??? - or do I need to pay special attention to something
in the process?
Does it exist shareware backup software (not domain-name bound) which
issuesbetter than NTBackup..?
Thanks a lot if there is a kind soul who can enlighten me on these
regards
Gene
I would probably do this:
- Install the first new disk as a temporary slave.
- Format it and make it active.
- Boot the machine with a Bart PE boot CD
(http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/#download)
- Use xcopy.exe with the appropriate switches to copy
Disk1 to the new disk, including hidden files, system files and ACLs.
- Repeat the process for the second disk.
This is a zero risk process that does not require an auxiliary
installation of Windows. Creating a Bart PE boot CD takes
a bit of time but I find it an extremely valuable tool.
