2003 Security Issue

Hey all,
I have a 2003 server, with AD installed. The rest of the network is made up of XP Pro machines, which are *NOT* part of the domain. They can still access shares/files, as I'm using the Guest account for permissions (it's a pretty enclosed network).
With Windows 2000, you could restrict shares/files to specific users, and as long as they were using a matching username/password on their machine, they didn't need to be part of the domain - but the permissions still worked. 2003 doesn't seem to be like that, unless you are part of the domain, you get an "access denied" error. Anyone know of a way around this, or is it a new feature inherent to 2003 Server? Any help appreciated.
TIA, DSt.
