Consider Windows Server Update Services:

This does exactly what you describe below. I used an earlier version to automate the update to XP SP2.
For updating Norton AV, I don't believe a central update server solution is possible. My company uses Symantec AntiVirus:

Hi,
I work in a computer service department where we maintain customers PC, running Windows XP. Is there a way I could install Windows server 2003 on a pc and download the updates for Windows XP Home/Pro/Media Centre Edition, So that instead of downloading the updates form the internet every time, I could download them once onto the server, and then get the PC's to connect to the server and update themselves...it takes us around 1 1/2 hrs by the time we have done it (we also update Norton antivrus so I guess we'd want the same for that too). Any suggestions?
I haven't had too much experience with the server OS, but I am willing to learn.
Robert
