Here is an article that describes how share permissions and NTFS permissions
interact with each other.

If you're not seeing the folder permissions on folders, one possible reason
is that your disk is formatted to FAT rather than NTFS.

To change permissions in bulk, check out the cacls.exe utility, which is
built in to Windows.
