John,
I understand that these users can see each other shares. If you have
computers A and B in HR workgroup and you want to limit access to shares --
you will have to create 2 accounts on computer A and 2 accounts on computer
B (4 accounts all together). You have to note here that passwords will not
synchronize between computer A and B when user changes password on computer
A. If user changes password on computer A he/she will also need to manually
change password on computer B for that same account... It can get even more
confusing. E.g. if you have 5 computers and 5 users -- you will need to
manage 25 accounts.
If you do this you can limit who can access shares on computers A (only
users that have _local_ accounts on this computer A). You _can't_ use
accounts from computer A on computer B in Workgroup.
Now if you do this -- and user A with username Anne needs to access share on
computer B and user Anne gets prompted for username and password it will
need to enter B\Anne under username and password in its own field (this is
the password that you set locally on computer B for account Anne...). Same
goes for the other direction.
If user Bob wants to access share on compute A from computer B -- once he
gets prompted for username Bob will need to enter A\Bob for the username...
Sorry -- but this is how workgroups work.
If you want to make management of this workgroup easier, you will have to
set up domain where you have central account management on domain
controller. These accounts can be then used on all computers that join
domain that you set up. You can use these account to set restrictions who
can log on and who can access files and shares etc...
