If you mean RDP then RDP would be Remote Desktop Protocol -- protocol that
is used by Terminal Services. You can use it to connect to remote server
(using Remote Desktop Client) and administer it or in another scenario run
applications on the server.

To put this into practice. I have few customers that run Remote Desktop
Client on very weak computer (hardware that only meets minimum operating
system requirement -- and some times even less) all over the country. Now
all these clients connect to central Terminal Server (RDP server) and run
latest application on the server (e.g. Office 2003 applications etc...).
This way you also don't have to worry about backup of local data -- since
there is none. All the data resides on the server on central location. And
if the client computer fails you simply replace it with a computer that has
RDP client installed and it can continue to work.
