You need to make sure that DNS is working properly on the DC(s). While the
netbios ports are open on the DC and the XP clients, it is not generally
used. In fact it (the client machine) queries the DNS (configured on the
NIC) for certain LDAP records. Next it queries for SRV records such as the
Global Catalog. If DNS is not operating properly your XP clients will not
join the domain. :(
