Server boot problems after installing Microsoft Hotfixes KB901214 and KB903235

The other evening I installed KB901214 and KB903235 as well as
KB8990830 [malicious code remover]. As instructed I allowed the
server to reboot. During the reboot it stayed on Applying Network
Setting for a very long time. They it stayed on Applying Computer
Settings for a very long time. I eventually shut down the server with
the power switch and started it up again. The same thing occured.
After waiting 45 minutes for Applying Computer Settings, I went home.
The next morning the normal login screen was there but many of the
services were not running. I brought in our local computer systems
support person who spent a few hours trying to find the problem and the
solution. He found some reference to a similar issue with the same
hotfixes but no usueful information. After trying several things, he
downloaded and installed SP1. That took care of the problem. There was
nothing in the event logs describing the boot problems.

Although the server is running properly we still would like to know
what caused the problem and how SP1 fixed it.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
