virtual servers still there?

hi

I am trying to set up my sharepoint server again after the first time i
messed it up.
what problem is that when i try to extend my virtual server is says:

"The configuration database shows that the virtual server has been extended
already. To extend this virtual server, click "Extend and map to another
virtual server" in the Provisioning Options section of the Extend Virtual
Server page."

So I extend and map to another virtual server but it does not seem to work
like it did.

how do i delete the old virtual servers as they are only listed in server
mapping under extend and map to another virtual server.
