Re: SBS 2003 Premium - Upgrade MSDE to SQL Server for Sharepoint

Thanks for the suggestion Zack.

Do you think the absence of Fax Services can be anything to do with my
problem? I've been reinstalling SBS again (yes, glutton for punishment) and
I'd forgotten that this is the only thing I've been turning off as I haven't
used the ancient fax media for about 5 years. It's the only non-standard
thing about my install.

To be perfectly honest, I have now run out of enthusiasm to get to the
bottom of this having spent 9 days (yes, NINE days) of installing the same
O/S. I'm determined, but not insane.

It's clear that there's a real issue, maybe incompatible hardware (Dell
Poweredge 500SC with .75 GB RAM), who knows, but what's sure is I don't have
the knowledge of where to look to find out how to determine what is going
wrong, and that's assuming the installation would let me. It effectively
hangs (the installation hangs, not the server, the processor idle is at about
98%+ so there's nothing going on at-all other than the odd flicker of disk
light and fans whiring).

For now I have decided that I'll just install SQL Server and defer upgrading
the Sharepoint services to a (much) later date, if ever. I'll carry on using
MSDE to preserve what little sanity I have left.

Curiously, I didn't have this trouble with W2K or W2K3 Server (mind you, I
didn't have trouble with Windows Update either until this last new revision),
and both of those were installed on exactly this same hardware!

I subscribe to the Action Pack so I can test and find out what sort of
problems I'll run into, such as this for instance. If I need Sharepoint to be
using SQL Server and a client asks me to do their upgrade, well... I may be
off sick that day! If I'm not, I'll be the one with camouflage paint on doing
an impression of a rubber plant 8-)

I shall monitor the groups for similar experiences, and, hopefully a cure.

Thanks again.
