It will work as a "desktop". I'm not sure what changes were recommended to be made or what. If I were in the same boat I would just disable the services not needed.

I would have to guess the instability has to do with one or two of the modifications you made, or possibly a bad or loose cable or card.
If those themes were "unsupported" try removing them.

The bottom line is the server version *can* be used as a workstation if that is what you want. It basically can handle more connections to it, it can handle more RAM than the average workstation OS, but *some* applications have a more expensive version designed to work on servers. He should be aware of this when purchasing products. He should specifically ask if it works on a server and don't assume it works on a server if it does not state that specifically. You don't want him spending money on software that won't run on a server.

What you want to do can be done.

Danny,

Last evening I imposed myself upon the location of my dilemma...

I first established a new profile.

I then went and repeated each of the steps that are recommended for the downgrade. None required a re-do. They'd all taken the first time through.

Next, I went into device manager and one by one checked with MS to confirm if each driver was up to date. All were blessed.

(I'd been up without a glitch for nearly two hours and was feeling good)

So, with all the confirming behind me I decided to check my mail. I needed to establish a new profile in Thunderbird...As soon as I attempted configure the profile? She blinked out! This may be complicated by the sharing of a Thunderbird install in his other OS...

I was weary by then and surrendered. However? I'm leaning toward Thunderbird being the source of the 'crash'. I still am baffled why there is not warning? The ol's black screen and reboot?!

My guess as to why the error logs show nothing? It dumps before any error reporting can take place? No, not a single log shows any evidence of the "final', untimely exit. In fact, the logs are error free! Which is not bad. There are several "info" entries and a couple of minor "warnings" - so I know the reprorting is working - but nothing serious is happening but no, I can't confirm from the logs why it's closing...

On the plus side! Things were moving along at record speed. Yeah, it was not only not hesitating prior to execution of a command? It was clearly faster than any OS I'd used. (Yes this subjective, I'm gong with my instincts)

So, I am narrowing down the 'cause'. No, I can't say I have provided him with a wealth of apps, but a CD played fine. (It was nice to have a distraction of a bit of music during my labor)

I shall proceed with cautious optimism. Yes, if one has the bucks? I think '03 may get my vote as "less than a server" before it's all over. I was more than impressed by its response - till the surprise and uncalled for ending.

Again, thank you for the encouragement. I see the light at the end of the tunnel.

You didn't have to indulge me, I appreciate your effort. I remember when Usenet worked that way!
