I think it is a damned if you do and a damned if you don't situation.
In my half a decade+ of using Microsoft Windows Servers the average
life cycle for a system is usually 75 days. Anything beyond that and
you are seriously missing out on critical patches. If your server is a
high end server that gets alot of public exposure i believe that a
monthly reboot is pretty much right on track with microsoft's constant
release of security patches.
That being said, timing a server's update and reboot while personnel
who can respond to a problem and yet while not effecting services is
often times difficult.
That also being said, there is a lot to be said for the adage, If it's
not broken don't touch it; don't even think about it .
