It's the HAL, which is chosen at install time. Your old motherboard only
supported one processor, am I right?

If so, then by changing the motherboard to a dual-processor but not doing a
reinstallation of Windows, you have kept the old HAL which doesn't support
multiple processors.

The following is not recommended - IT MIGHT TRASH YOUR INSTALLATION!

You might have some success by manually changing the HAL. You can do this
using the Device Manager - choose to update the driver the object under the
'Computer' subtree. It's probably currently saying "Advanced Configuration
and Power Interface (ACPI) PC", or maybe "ACPI Uniprocessor PC". If you
choose to upgrade the driver, you can manually choose the "ACPI
Multiprocessor PC".

According to MS though, you have to reinstall to change to a multiprocessor
HAL. If I fitted a new motherboard to a server, I'd do a clean install as a
matter of course.

In short, a reinstall is the only way to go unless you want to risk things
going seriously wrong. If you back up all your data first then I guess you
have nothing to lose by trying the above - you're gonna have to back up your
data anyway.
