MDAC issues on Windows 2000 Server

I am having issues updating my windows 2000 server to mdac 2.8
Currently we have 2.5 sp3. 2.53.2600.0

After running the mdac 2.8 install, I reboot and launch Compent Checker.
Which then shows my default is 2.5sp3 but also shows that 2.8 RTM is
installed but with only 5 items. How can I get this corrected? I need MDAC
2.8 for veritas backupexec 10. I have tried to generate a install log, but
one will not generate. Mdac_typ.exe /C:"Setup /GC C:\Mdaclog.txt"

Windows 2000 SP4 w/ current service packs as of 02/27/05
Exchange 2000 SP3
Symantec Enterprise w/ Mail Security for exchange
