If the only purpose of connecting to the Internet in the first instance is
to use Automatic Updates or Windows Update, then placing the machine behind
a NAT box or hardware firewall is a very sensible first step.
The problem with the current (pre-SP1) implementation of the Internet
Connection Firewall is that it doesn't load early enough in the boot
sequence and your machine is vulnerable while rebooting. So, you reboot to
apply patches and your machine can be infected while rebooting.
When Windows Server 2003 SP1 is released, it will have the same Windows
Firewall that XP SP2 has and things will be a lot better.
