Keeping one card only is fine it will actually run better with one if you
later decide to install more advanced networking services on it (esp. if you
make it a domain controller, WINS server, or this machine becomes a master
browser).
More questions - does this cable modem have firewall, DHCP capabilities and
does it have multiple Ethernet ports for internal LAN machines or only one?
