Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Thanks for this, unfortunately as time is pressing, we moved on before seeing
your reply.

I found a post that described identical symptons; in particular, if we click
on Control Panel->Network Connections we see no connections and we lose
access to everything except the desktop. The post suggested deleting the
winsock2 key from the registry. We did this and the delay in applying
settings no longer occurred. However, when we tried to continue with the
upgrade we got a message "Unable to access the Active Directory". We started
the upgrade from scratch and it did a complete, new install; it even managed
to rename the disc partitions except for c: but most importantly it lost all
our Active Directory settings.

This is the upgrade on the live server, a Dell PowerEdge 2600 with three
36Gb discs configured under Raid 5.

As part of the preparation for this upgrade, we took a full dump of the live
server and restored to a backup server. This backup server is a Dell
PowerEdge 1400; less memory, less disc space, but still sufficient for
testing configuration changes. The upgrade on this machine was incredibly
smooth with no problems, which gave us confidence in upgrading the live
server!

We are now taking a backup of the backup server and will attempt a restore
to the live server to get back our Active Directory Users/Computers etc.
