SMS 2000 DCOM errors under Win2000

We are experiencing an error in SMS 2000 running on Windows 2003 Server
(Standard). We have had numerous problems with the default security features
in 2003 that prevent SMS from working.
DCOM is generating the message below when attempting to run the HW/SW
inventories:
Access denied attempting to launch a DCOM Server. The server is:
{B837493E-0508-4086-AD41-DC642915B3DD}
The user is IWAM_SMS01/SMS01,
SID=S-1-5-21-3777083451-1749941514-610364752-1008.

I have been able to find no reference to this sort of error in the Knowledge
Base. Also I have set the services to run as either the local system account
and the domain administrator, niether of which helped.
