Re: DNS Forwarder Issues

In news:39990507-CF19-4F50-91E2-CEB4CD89FB7D@xxxxxxxxxxxxx,
John <John@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>, posted the following:
When I do an nslookup from 1 domain to another (any host - 2 separate
forests - Win2K3 environments), I'm getting a 'DNS request timed out'
response. I can ping and tracert between hosts fine. I have DNS
Forwarders set up, and verified. Going in one direction, I'm fine
with nslookups. But going the other, it times out. The DNS event
viewer is showing no errors, I've restarted the service and cleared
cache. When doing the nslookup, the correct server name (DNS server)
and IP are listed.

As a temporary workaround on a host, I added a secondary reference
to the other domain - which provides me with a favorable nslookup
result. This tells me that nothing is blocking DNS traffic between
the 2 domains, right? Once I remove the secondary reference, the
NSlookup fails.

Any troubleshooting ideas?

Thx. - John

Hello John,

While in nslookup, if you change the server you are using to the other forest's DNS server, does it work?

How are you pinging? Single host name or using the FQDN of the host? It works in both directions?

It may come down to search suffixes. Can you provide example nslookup results, as well as an ipconfig /all of a sample host from both sides, please?

Thank you,
