Re: DNS works for server subnet but not others

Hello jfisk,
So the 192.168.100.1 is a router which also provides DHCP or is it a server OS with RRAS configured?
CSDAD is the NetBIOS name of the domain and at least Netbios over TCP/IP has to be enabled, you have it, but because you use it over a different subnet, you should install a WINS server.

I actually do not know why it only has csd-eng.com... (It pulls this
from the
server correct?).
I took IPV 6 off the card (still would not connect to the domain)
192.168.100.1 is gateway and DHCP server for this subnet, I hard set
the DNS
server (the DHCP server is handing out our old DNS server addresses).
What I have done since your last reply:
Went into Advanced DNS on the client, under DNS suffix for this
connection I
put in "csdad.csd-eng.com". After this I tried to add to the domain
using
"CSDAD" (didn't work), but then tried "csdad.csd-eng.com", and it
worked. So
what do I have screwed up here? and is there a way to make these
client
changes in mass?

Hello jfisk,
If "csdad.csd-eng.com" is your domain name, why does the client has
only "csd-eng.com" added to the DNS suffix search list?
Additional disable IPv6 on the NIC.
What is the 192.168.100.1 for a device, configured as Default gateway
and DHCP server?

No secondary DNS Entries, the client on the different subnet is via
a
router.
Thanks for the help.

The domain name CSDAD might be a NetBIOS domain name. If this is
the
case, verify that the domain name is properly registered with WINS.
If you are certain that the name is not a NetBIOS domain name, then
the following information can help you troubleshoot your DNS
configuration.
The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service
location (SRV) resource record used to locate an Active Directory
Domain Controller for domain CSDAD:
The error was: "DNS name does not exist."
(error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR)
The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.CSDAD
Common causes of this error include the following:
- The DNS SRV records required to locate a AD DC for the domain are
not registered in DNS. These records are registered with a DNS
server automatically when a AD DC is added to a domain. They are
updated by the AD DC at set intervals. This computer is configured
to use DNS servers with the following IP addresses:
192.168.0.117
- One or more of the following zones do not include delegation to
its child zone:
CSDAD
. (the root zone)

Hi,
I am setting up a 2008 server and am joining clients to the
domain.
A
client in teh same subnet as the server can join fine
(192.168.0.X),
but if
the client is on another subnet (say, 192.168.100.X) I get DNS
errors
and am
told I cannot join the domain. I can ping back and forth... oddly
from the
nslookups I have done so far it appears that even works. Any
ideas
on
what I
have going on here?
Thanks.
