Re: Subdomains in W2K3

Thanks Kevin.

Please find our setup.

We have Exchange running on rd.com. We use a third party software for
collaboration, kind like sharepoint. This software has its own mailhost
(SMTP) listening on port 25. The software automatically generates email
addresses like docID@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx I don't want my corporate users to have
an address space like *@research.rd.com. Users will respond to this
application from %user%@xxxxxx to docID@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx When outbound
messages arrive they hit our SMTP gateway and a force route within the SMTP
gateway product will route the message to the mailhost hosting this
collaboration application.

All I need is to add research as a subdomain to rd.com, create a A record
and add an MX for research.rd.com. I am not sure whether I need this setup on
our LAN DNS. We already have MX setup with a public IP on our public DNS.

TIA

Hello,

We run Windows 2003 domains with integerated DNS. For example, our
domain is rd.com. I want to create a subdomain for rd.com, say
RESEARCH.rd.com. We currently have an MX for rd.com and I would like
to add a new MX for subdomain RESEARCH.rd.com. How could I do this
and is there a procudure lsit I could follow to get this accomplished.

TIA

You shouldn't need an internal MX record if both email domains are hosted on
the same mail server. Publically, when you create the MX record in the
rd.com zone, enter research in the "host or domain" field. If, the same mail
server hosts both email domains, use the same name in the SMTP server field.
For internal users you need only the record to access the mail server, and
configure the mail server to accept email for the @research.rd.com email
addresses. Assuming you are using Exchange, use System Manager to add
@research.rd.com to the Recipient Policy.
