Re: VPN cannot resolve names to address

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Ipconfig /all before connection to the VPN indicates the client gets it
information (IP, DHCP, DNS) from the ISP, as one might expect.

Immediately after connection to the VPN the report indicates the server has
repopulated all that information with its own, the client gets an IP from
that server on the proper rnage/subnet and is looking at that server as DNS
server BUT names are not translated to IP address, so you can ping an IP
address in the domain but not the corresponding name. the only exception is
the server itself whch can be pinged by name and IP.

I greatly appreciate any instructions on how to correct this issue.

thanks.

The VPN Client must use the correct AD/DNS Server IP# in the TCP/IP Settings

via DHCP (your DHCP) when they connect.

The VPN Connection "takesover" almost everything once it connects so if it
lacks any information in its config things won't work as expected.

small business server 2003 environment: VPN users tpically use Remote
Desktop
to access their machines remotely. Once connected to the VPN the only
machine
that can be contacted via its name is the SBS DC/DNS server/DC/ISA server.
If
you know the IP address of the machine you want you can log onto it via
Remote Desktop, but not by name. So you have to log onto the server and
ping
the machine you want to get the address and then log on.

how do I fix this? I do not want to assign IP addresses if I don't have
to.
I want users to use machine names to log onto their machines.

ps I have a test machine that was part of the domain, it can resolve the
names, over the VPN but machines that haven't been part of the domain
cannot.

any input is appreciated, thanks in advance.
