We run Windows 2003 domain. Our LAN DNS server is Windows 2003 and it
is active directory intergerated. Our clients use DHCP server for IP
lease. We have mixed clients in our environment with Windows 2000,
and Vista installs.
I noticed in our DNS, we have an IP address registered to more than 5
hosts. For example, if I do an nslookup for client 1 I get 10.10.4.10
and I do an nslookup fo client 2 I may get the same IP (10.10.4.10)
and its current IP address say, 10.10.4.11. To brief it, it's not
really affecting any services but I have tons of duplicate entries in
our DNS causing a huge administartive overhead and delayed lookups.
I noticed whenever we release a new client to our users, we don't
uncheck "Register this connection's addresses in DNS" from Loacl Area
Properties > Internet properties > Properties > Advanced > DNS. Find
below my queries:
1. Should we uncheck this option to eliminate duplicate enteries?
I clear this check box to insure the client cannot register itself.
2. Is there any functionalities I miss if I uncheck this option?
The client won't be able to register for either the Primary or Connection
DNS Suffix, should you need the client to register in two different zones.
3. We don't do DNS scavenging at this time. Will that be a way to fix
this issue?
I've seen more people get in trouble with scavenging than I can think of.
Some end up setting the scavenging time way too short trying to clean up
their zones and end up scavenging critical records.
4. Why is DHCP not de registering this IP addresses once lease
expires from DNS database?
The DHCP server cannot delete records it does not own. The best solution
I've found is to stop DHCP Clients from registering in DNS (By clearing the
box you noted), this allows DHCP to treat all clients as if the do not
support DNS updates, and registers for all DHCP Clients. I'm including a
