Re: Last Update - Anyone else having issues getitng root hints?

I installed both patches via WU. I removed both at the same time as these
servers must be up as much as possible, so we try not to recycle them any
more than neccesary.

Hi,
I have to DNS servers (Internet) for our hosting environment. Both are
stand-alone and before the last update (July Patch Tuesday) one of my
names servers had no problems grabbing root hints when it started,
the other manually copy from the other.

After the DNS patch neither DNS server will get root hints and thus
refuses to look up non-authoritative queries. Both DNS servers will
resolve authoritative queries without a problem.

The servers ar Server 2003 patched to the hilt except I removed the
last two DNS related patches so I could again get the root hints.
Both a vanilla installs with the exception of no dynamic updates,
everything else is as installed.

Hi Allen,

Curious, were you able to isolate which patch caused it? There is a
current issue concerning KB851748 was installed two posters reported
dns.exe will show 2500 open sessions when you run a netstat -ab.

I reported the issue to our MVP link. If this is also causing issues with
Root hints, I can add that to the report. But also curious, when one or
the other patch is installed, does the Root zone show up (the dot zone) or
in DNS properties, is Recursion disabled under the Advanced tab?
