I do have the printer spooler service. I was looking under "spooler"
for some foolish reason but it's actually under "printer spooler"
which is started. This is nowhere in the event log until after

On an entirely different subject (and perhaps I should start a new
thread for this), Windows Update won't install an available update and
is also polluting the event log with an error.

Event ID 20
Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update
with error 0x80070643: Security Update for SQL Server 2000 Service
Pack 4 (KB948110).

I don't believe this to be related to the credentials I entered since
it wouldn't update this morning prior to entering the credentials and
rebooting. However, even after reboot, I still can't update.

You and everone else is getting this event, it has to do with the sa account
credentials in SQL 2000, I've figured that much out.
