Re: Dynamic Update

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

Dynamic update was disabled Globally under TCPIP/Parameters in the registry.
Took a while to find it.

Thanks for your help though.

I am having a real issue with Dynamic update in DNS. For some reason none
of
my clients will register if I use Secure or Non secure updates. We are
running Windows 2003 with Active Directory Integrated DNS. I followed the
artcile listed below

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/287156

SOA looks fine and resolution of DC or static entries are fines form the
local machine. The clients are set to Enable Registration of the
connection
and I have tried ipconfig /registerdns.

Is there PRIMARY Domain name set in the SYSTEM Control panel?

(They need to know WHICH zone in which to register.)

Is the zone DYNAMIC? Obvious question but you don't actually say it
above.

Are these DHCP assigned machines? If so, do you have the domain name
set in the DHCP scope?

Do the DCs register themselves? (It will prove registration is possible.)

I turned on Debug logging for DNS on the domain controller. Still not much
information related to th registration of this machine.

20080529 14:51:16 244 PACKET UDP Snd 10.10.10.4 b5ef R Q [8281 DR
SERVFAIL] (6)pc31(7)pc(3)net(0)

20080529 14:51:18 244 PACKET UDP Rcv 10.10.10.4 6b8c Q [0001 D
NOERROR] (6)pc31(7)pc(3)net(0)

There is nothing in the event log either. DHCP Service and DNS services
look
okay on both the cleint and the DNS server. Does anyone have any
suggestions
on where to go from here?

Is the DHCP server (supposed to be) doing the registration of the clients?

Are these DHCP assigned machines? If so, do you have the domain name
set in the DHCP scope?

Is the DHCP machine in the domain, able to find the Dynamic "master", and
set to use ONLY the INTERNAL DNS Server (set)?

Are the clients set to use ONLY the INTERNAL DNS Server (set)?
