Long story that I'll try to make short...
Third party vendor installs a server running a web-based app and
tells us that we need to use a URL like www.mydomain.org/folder/file
Our people don't want to use the long URL, but just want to use
www.mydomain.org.
I don't have access to the vendor's server to see if the web server
config could be changed.
So, I'm looking into DNS for both our internal LAN DNS servers and
external DNS service that hosts our .org domain.
Internal DNS servers are Win2003 R2 AD-integrated servers. I don't
see any discussion of URL forwarding in documentation, nor do I find
anything in Google searches regarding how to do this on a MS DNS
server.
While I continue to search, I thought I'd throw a quick message on
this forum to see if someone knows how to do this.
DNS cannot resolve a name to a directory.
Your vendor can convert the directory to a virtual web site, such as
myapp.mydomain.org.
What you can do for internal users, is to create a web site on your server
for myapp.mydomain.org, then in the properties *** of that web site, Home
Directory tab, select "A Redirection to a URL", then in the field that
opens, type in http://www.mydomain.org/folder/file Then as long as the users
are on the internal network, they can use http://myapp.mydomain.org, which
would be redirected by your web server to the long URL.
If you don't have a mydomain.org zone, create a new zone, name it
myapp.mydomain.org, then in that zone create on new host, leave the name
field blank, and give it the IP of the web server with the web site you
created.
If you do have a mydomain.org zone, create a new host named myapp, and give
it the IP.
