Re: extra server dns entries

Read inline please.

ChuckN <Chuck@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> typed:
We are running a Win2K3 Server Enterprise domain controller with a
backup domain controller.

When I try to access my server using its name, I sometimes see long
delays. One program said it could not find the server. When I look
in DNS, I see an entry for the server's primary IP address, an entry
for our VPN NIC, and another entry that doesn't make sense to me. (I
have no more NIC's in the server.)

I assume the delays are caused by the multiple entries. I deleted
the VPN entry and the mystery entry, but they keep returning. I
assume that the reason for the problems resolving the server name is
because of the multiple entries. Any suggestions?

Check your interfaces tab on the DNS server's Properties *** in the DNS
console. Both DCs should be listening on the IP of the Internal Network
adapter. This and the Register this connection's addresses in DNS in TCP/IP
properties controls what IP addresses are registered with the server's name.
If there are any unused NICs on either system, make sure they are disabled,
and don't just say network cable disconnected. Leaving them enabled with a
cable disconnected will give them a 169.154.x.x APIPA number, that will be
registered in DNS if it is listening on the address.
