You say
Never use a router's address for DNS unless you know for a fact the
router
can resolve the AD Domain, which is highly unlikely.
How can I test whether it can or cant resolve the AD Domain ?

nslookup gc._msdcs.<yourADDomainName> <router'sIP>
If it can resolve your AD Domain, it will return thge IP addresses
of your Global Catalogs.

Thanks for your responses, they have been helpfull.

I have tried the following command as suggested here are the results.
I dont know if they make sense or not.
****************************
nslookup

*** Can't find server name for address 192.168.1.120: Non-existent
domain
Default Server: UnKnown
Address: 192.168.1.120

gc.msdcs.mydomain 192.168.1.169
Server: [192.168.1.169]
Address: 192.168.1.169

*** 192.168.1.169 can't find gc.msdcs.mydomain: Non-existent domain

**************************************************************************
nslookup was run from the 2003 server.
This server is the dns.
The 169 ip is the router that serves up dhcp, but also seems to do
some dns.
Are these responses apropriate, Im not sure its showing me the global
catelogues ??

They are not acceptable, you cannot use the router for DNS in TCP/IP
properties, in any position.
You should probably disable DHCP on the router, and configure DHCP on the
server. If you configure the scope using the new scope wizard, it will take
you through most of the common options you need.
You may also want to configure DHCP to update DNS for you and disable DNS
updates on the clients and create a reverse lookup zone.
